Holidays in the heart of Paisley . . . wish you were here?

Holidays at home could provide a huge boost to Paisley as travel to foreign climes continues to be difficult.

Student rooms in the heart of the town are set to house tourists during the summer.

The bold move is being lined up for Gilmour House, the former HMRC block above the Piazza.

Most students leave the premises - now known as MyPad Paisley - when term ends.

Planning rules have so far banned them from leasing out the rooms to non-students.

Now operator Fresh wants permission changed so it can offer “short-term holiday accommodation”.

Any objectors to the plan have until July 7 to contact Renfrewshire Council.

The owner wants to be able to let out the student flats from the “last weekend in May until the last weekend in August” every year.

The five-storey former tax office above Gilmour Street was emptied in 2008 then put on the market.

It was bought by the Piazza Shopping Centre in 2011 and a year later was bought by property developers FreshStart Living.

It took more than a year to turn it into a £7m student paradise.

The 1970s block, where tax workers once sat, was transformed into accommodation over five floors.

A total of 196 of the 235 bedrooms are ensuite.

It proved a huge draw for UWS and West College students, as well as those who could get the train to Glasgow.

The building boasts club rooms, TVs in kitchens and social spaces with pool tables, table tennis and vending machines.

Fresh now provides accommodation for 21,000 students in 65 locations.

The application to open the Paisley premises to tourists will be decided by Renfrewshire Council.
