Holidaymakers warned to ‘avoid flying’ to Portugal due to planned airport strike action

Holidaymakers who may be planning a trip to Portugal this month have been warned of widespread disruption due to upcoming strikes by airline staff in the country.

Staff from the Civil Aviation Workers’ Union (SINTAC) and the Commercial Aviation Staff Union (SQAC) in Portugal are set to walk out for a three-day period across August 19, 20 and 21. The unions have said that staff will strike in airports across the country if their demands for higher wages are not met, the Liverpool Echo reports .

The industrial action could see employees including cabin crew, security staff, ground handlers and fire services walk out later this month. SINTAC threatened that the strike will impact all workers in all 10 airports run by ANA airports authority, which includes Portugal’s largest airport located in its capital, Lisbon Airport.

Local news site Portugal Resident advised passengers that they “would be wise to try and avoid flying” into or out of Portugal on the planned strike dates if the walkout goes ahead. The anticipated disruption is the latest in a series of headaches for holidaymakers this summer , as strikes by airline staff have also just begun in neighbouring Spain.

Ryanair cabin crew in the country began industrial action on Monday, August 8, and will stage five months of walkouts every week from Monday to Thursday in an effort to secure better pay and working conditions. Previous strike action across June and July over a total of 18 days caused 310 flight cancellations and around 3,455 delays.
