Holidaymakers' vaccine helpline launched to avoid Covid travel misery

Summer sunseekers have been warned holiday fun could be marred if they are not fully vaccinated before they travel. They have been advised to check Covid entry rules of their destination to avoid a trip being ruined before the aircraft takes off.

With millions preparing to jet off from Manchester Airport, the city’s health bosses say travellers should check the entry requirements of their destinations before they depart, and have launched a telephone helpline to offer essential advice. Some countries do not allow entry without proof of full vaccination, while others operate strict testing regimes.

David Regan, the city’s director of public health, called for anyone who has not yet been fully vaccinated to come forward now before the holiday season sets in. He said: “It’s that time when we all start looking forward to a change of scene – which thankfully is possible this year – and we want the whole city to know that it is never too late to come forward for a vaccine.

“Some of our younger travellers may well be inspired to go away as we head to a new season of a popular villa-based dating show – but ‘Lovelorn Island’ could be the reality destination for those who aren’t up to date on vaccines or travel requirements. I’d urge everyone to check, or talk to us about it.”

Dr Manisha Kumar, a GP and medical director at Manchester Health and Care Commissioning, said: “It’s crucial that you plan ahead and receive the full course as this will give you the best opportunity for a safe holiday.”

Manchester has set up a helpline, open seven days a week from 9am to 5pm, staffed by a nursing team with a translation service available. The free number is 0800 840 3858 or text 07890 036 892.
