Holidaymakers travelling to Greece warned to expect long delays at passport control

Lots of Scousers will be heading off to Greece for their summer holidays this year - but this year it might take them longer to get there than usual, the government has warned.

The Foreign and Commonwealth office have warned holidaymakers they could face long delays at passport control if they travel to some Greek hotspots.

If you're heading to Athens, Corfu, Crete or any other beautiful island the Foreign office are warning you to be prepared, reports Birmingham Live.

The change applies to all EU citizens coming from outside the "Schengen area", who will now face delays at passport control.

Despite being in the EU (for now), the UK is not in Schengen, along with other member states Croatia, Cyprus, and Ireland.

Iceland, Norway, Switzerland and Liechtenstein are not in the EU, but are part of the Schengen Zone.

In statement the FCO said: "As of April 7, 2019, the Hellenic Police will begin implementing systematic passport control checks for all European citizens travelling to and from destinations outside the Schengen area (including the UK) in line with a 2017 Schengen Borders Code regulation.

"Increased waiting times at passport control are possible on departure from and arrival into Greece. You should ensure you arrive at the airport in good time."

This means that, whatever happens to the UK's EU membership , you will be facing longer delays at passport controls if you are heading to or from Greece from the UK.
