Holidaymakers quit slopes for winter sun breaks because of Covid confusion

Winter sports holidaymakers are planning to ditch the slopes for a sunshine beach break instead because of uncertainty over travel rules, it has been revealed.

Initially, one-in-10 adults were planning a skiing or snowboarding trip, rising to almost a quarter of 18-34 year olds. But as many as 90 per cent of those are now rethinking their travel plans.

Some 20 per cent are no longer choosing to jet overseas, with a similar number who have already booked a winter sports trip considering changing or cancelling it, according to travel insurance provider battleface.

Almost 20 per cent of those who were planning a ski or snowboarding trip this winter claim they still intended to hit the slopes, but will leave booking to the last minute because of the possibility of travel rules changing.

The research, based on a poll of 2,000, also suggests confusion surrounding the rules for unvaccinated and once-vaccinated 12-19 year olds, when travelling with fully vaccinated parents.

More than 60 per cent of parents with teenage children blame uncertainty around potential Covid restrictions for putting them off jetting abroad in the short term.

Almost half of UK adults with teenage children are unaware of specific travel regulations for children travelling with fully vaccinated parents or guardians.

A battleface spokesperson said: “Travel restrictions and entry requirements are in constant flux, and even with the Christmas holidays seemingly round the corner, it’s too soon to think about cancelling or moving your holiday plans just yet.

“We encourage people to ensure they’re fully protected for their trip and consider buying insurance a little closer to their trip.

“Policies will continue to cover if the FCDO travel advisories change or the country is moved to the Department for Transport’s red list.”
