Holidaymakers hit as Gatwick Airport suspends ALL flights due to air traffic control glitch

Gatwick Airport has suspended all flights due to a problem with the air traffic control.

The London airport has posted two messages to jetsetters on Twitter to explain the problem with flights.

They said: "Due to an air traffic control systems issue in Gatwick’s control tower, flights are currently suspended. We are working with ANS, our air traffic control provider, to rectify this issue as quickly as possible."

Gatwick Airport LGW then posted an update to the original tweet with an apology. They added: "We apologise and advise passengers to check flight info with your airline."

The technical glitch is affecting both arrivals and departures, and the BBC reports that incoming flights are being diverted to other airports.

The Mirror says air traffic control has warned that the issue is likely to persist until 9pm.

Hundreds of holidaygoers took to Twitter to complain and ask about their flights, and others made light of the situation.

One user said: "Sitting on the tarmac in Venice. Have been told we're being diverted to the nearest gelato stand. No complaints yet."

While another posted: "What an embarrassment!! No back up. 5 hour flight and told to land at Stansted last minute been sat here over an hour. Complete joke!"
