Holidaymaker found dead in Turkish hotel room had very high level of alcohol in system

A holidaymaker had the equivalent of more than four times the legal limit to drive in her system after she was found dead in a Turkish hotel room.

Tracy Smith was known in the past to binge drink which seemed to have happened on holiday in Antalya, an inquest in Nottingham heard.

The 46-year-old, who was a resident of Nottingham, had been staying at the Haydarpasha Palace, Turkler, Mevkii, Antalya, when she died on April 23, 2019.

Opening and concluding a virtual inquest, assistant coroner Jonathan Straw spoke about the background information he had about Tracy who was in Turkey when she was found dead.

She had 333 milligrams of ethanol per 100 millilitres of blood when tests were carried out. The UK drink drive limit is 80 milligrams of alcohol per 100 millilitres of blood, the inquest was told.

Mr Straw said: "That would equate to just in excess of four times the legal limit in this country to drive. A very, very high level of ethanol and one in a female of this size, even with tolerance, would potentially be and was indeed fatal".

The conclusion of pathology was that Tracy died because of alcohol intoxication.

Background information was provided from a medical centre in Nottingham and a GP surgery which used to look after Tracy when she was resident here.

"There is a history of alcohol misuse," said Mr Straw. Tracy had not previously displayed symptoms of alcohol dependency. She was know in the past to binge drink "which seems to have happened on holiday in Turkey," added Mr Straw.

His conclusion was "this is an alcohol-related death".

"I offer my condolences to family and friends", said Mr Straw.
