Holiday makers told not to go to Glasgow Airport as flights are grounded

Hundreds of holiday makers due to travel to Spain have been told not to go to Glasgow Airport as Jet 2 cancels all flights to the country.

The airline confirmed last night that flights from the Paisley-based transport hub to mainland Spain would not go ahead.

Flights to Spanish islands including Tenerife, Fuerteventura, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote, Majorca, Menorca or Ibiza were also cancelled this morning.

The mass grounding of flights comes after the Scottish Government removed the air bridge to Spain following a spike in the number of coronavirus cases in several regions of the country.

The move means all those travelling to Spanish holiday resorts would be forced to self isolate for 14 days upon their return.

Nicola Sturgeon reimposed the quarantine measures three days after it was announced that Spain would be safe to visit for Scottish tourists.

In a statement Jet 2 said: “Following the latest government advice regarding travel to the Balearic and Canary Islands from the UK, we are advising customers who are due to travel to the following destinations - Tenerife, Fuerteventura, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote, Majorca, Menorca and Ibiza - not to go to the airport.

“This advice also applies to customers travelling to any of our destinations in Mainland Spain.

“We will be operating our scheduled programme of flights back to the UK from these destinations tomorrow.”

It is understood flights will not resume to Spanish destinations until at least August 17.

The UK The Foreign and Commonwealth Office also announced that the no quarantine rule would be ending for mainland Spain and its islands on Sunday “based on the current assessment of Covid-19 risks in the country”.

The FCO is however not asking people to cut short their holiday, but to follow the rules and regulations in the areas in which they are staying.
