- Spain has ordered that 53,000 illegal tourist flats be turned into permanent housing for residents after they failed to comply with national regulations.
- The properties did not meet the requirements of the national Single Register of Tourist and Seasonal Accommodations, a system designed to verify temporary rental properties.
- Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez confirmed that platforms such as Airbnb and Booking.com have been instructed to remove advertisements for these non-compliant properties.
- Airbnb said that less than 10 per cent of the revoked national registrations were active listings and would be immediately deregistered, with 70,000 additional listings now displaying official registration numbers.
- This move follows a Spanish court ruling in June that upheld an order for Airbnb to block nearly 66,000 rental listings across the country due to various violations.
