Holiday Gift Guide 2021: The Best Men’s Travel Footwear

By Will McGough, Contributor

While there are many important travel wardrobe decisions to make, don’t sleep on your feet. They are literally your connection to the physical world, and it’s a simple equation: Tired feet make for a tired traveler.

As you’ll see, we really value two qualities in travel footwear. The first is versatility. Footwear takes up a lot of space in your suitcase, so the more situational mileage you can get out of a pair, the better (why pack two pairs when one can suffice?).

The second is support. If what you wear on your feet does not prevent fatigue, then you’ll run out of energy every afternoon and evening. We value fashion, of course, but not at the expense of versatility and support.

With that in mind, here are some gift recommendations for the male traveler in your life:

The Dansko Kane Clog combines easy on-off capability with long-lasting foot support. Dansko

Dansko Kane Clog

Looking for a slip-on, slip-off travel shoe that won’t leave your feet fatigued? Consider the Dansko Kane Clog. It provides elite breathability thanks to its half-shoe design and ventilation holes, and its a breeze at security. While many slip-on, slip-off shoes exist, it’s not so easy to find a pair that can be worn all day over long distances. The Dansko’s cushioned insoles and slip-proof bottom soles performed well in testing, surprising with high marks in support and comfort.

The new Danner Trail 2650 Campo is a versatile, waterproof travel and walking shoe. Danner

Travel often requires a lot of walking - not just at the airport and in transit, but throughout the destination as well. So why not arm yourself with a proper walking shoe to keep your feet happy? The Trail 2650 Campo GTX from Danner sports a Vibram “megagrip” outsole, GORE-TEX Invisible Fit waterproofing, and a proprietary heel system designed to keep your foot secure in place (helps to avoid blisters). Wilderness worthy and stylish, it’s a great mountain-metro combo shoe that boasts extreme versatility, eliminating the need for multiple pairs.

The Phil Series boot from Foresake fits in just about anywhere. Foresake

These mid-ankle boots fit in just about everywhere, from dinner in the city to nature parks and outdoor areas. The Phils are a bit too fashion-forward for serious mountain hiking (they will get too beat up), but this sharp-looking shoe is perfect for travel thanks to its all-weather waterproofing, metro appeal, and lasting comfort.

The Vasque Satoru Moc's versatility is ideal for traveling. Vasque

Vasque Satoru Moc

Designed as an after-hiking shoe, we love what the Satoru Moc can offer travelers. It’s the perfect airport/travel-day shoe, with easy slip on/off, a breathable knit mesh fabric, and a memory foam footbed. It can be a workhorse in this way, or it can be the ideal secondary shoe in any occasion thanks to its packability. With no laces and a compactable 11-ounce design, you’ll barely notice they’re in your suitcase.

The Oboz Boseman Low offers the support of a hiking boot in a comfortable, everyday walker. Oboz

Oboz Bozeman Low

The appeal of the Bozeman from Oboz is similar to the Danner above, although this one will cost nearly half the price. Supportive and comfortable, the miles can pile up with the Bozeman, and the low-key profile means they won’t stand out. If you wanted to travel with only one shoe, something like the Bozeman would cover a lot of your bases.

The Timberland Stormbucks are dress shoes that can handle a full day's walk. Timberland

Because they are one-dimensional in use, we try to avoid packing dress shoes whenever possible, especially if something more casual can suffice. But when such fashion is needed, we recommend a shoe like the Timberland Stormbuck. It looks the part of a dress shoe up top, but its sole is that of a hiking boot or walking shoe, increasing its function. Comfortable and supportive, these are “dress shoes” you can put some miles on and wear all day, pounding the pavement in all types of weather while avoiding foot fatigue.

The Yucatan Sandals from Ecco offer the appeal of flip-flops with the support of a walking shoe. Ecco

Tevas are always a good choice when it comes to open-toed travel sandals, but if you’re looking for something different, check out the Yucatan Sandal from Ecco. Great for hot and humid climates that beg for open footwear, they are extremely versatile - you can walk comfortably for several miles in town, or wear them for outdoor activities, like biking, kayaking, walking to the beach, etc, all while providing more support than a standard sandal.

The Allbird Runner series is a fashionable, everyday shoe that will keep your feet fresh. Allbirds

Allbirds Runners

Don’t be fooled by the idea of “runners”... these are not a running shoe. The Allbirds Runner series are meant for everyday wear, sleek and modern in design. There are a few different varieties, and all offer great foot support and endurance. If you want extra weather protection, check out The Mizzles, which offer “puddleguard protection” with a higher heel and water repellant coating.
