Holiday expert says quarantine plans will 'destroy' all holidays in June

A travel expert has said the government's "quarantine" plans for travellers will "destroy pretty much every holiday for June".

Travel writer and broadcaster Simon Calder appeared on This Morning to answer viewers' travel questions but highlighted his concerns over the latest government plans.

Anyone arriving in the UK from abroad could be fined £1,000 if they fail to self-isolate for 14 days, the government is expected to announce today.

Home Secretary Priti Patel will provide more details at the daily briefing.

This Morning presenter Ruth Langsford spoke of the nation's confusion surrounding holidays and whether they could go abroad.

Simon said: "There's going to be even more [confusion] - in just over six hours' time Priti Patel, the Home Secretary, will announce the UK's very first quarantine."

The travel writer said he believed the plans would come into effect "from sometime in June" and said: "Everyone arriving in the UK will be told go home, stay there, stay indoors for two weeks.

"Inevitably the impact of that is rationally nobody will want to go abroad because they know when they come back, they have to stay inside for a fortnight."

He said he was told by a travel industry worker: "This is the day the travel industry died."

Simon added: "Quarantine will almost certainly destroy pretty much every holiday for June."

Regarding refunds for customers, the holiday expert said the law was "absolutely clear" on people being entitled to refunds but said time constraints may play a role in when they are paid out in the current circumstances.

He said TUI customers should be able to go online now and organise a refund themselves.

But he confirmed: "If you booked a proper package holiday, whatever happens you will get your money back."

Towards the end of his appearance, he said: "I'm confident from mid-July it will be possible to travel abroad".
