Holiday bookings expected to be down 93% before new lockdown even began

A new report from ABTA has found that holiday bookings between October to the end of the year are currently expected be down by 93% compared to this time last year.

That's not counting the impact of England's second lockdown which includes a ban on international travel, as the study was carried out at the end of October before the new measures were announced.

The findings, which looked at ABTA members, also revealed that 91% of holidays in July and August were either cancelled or changed due to travel restrictions.

The government's last minute changes to the travel corridors, and a blanket ban on cruise ship travel are just some of the factors which have had an impact - in fact, ABTA says that government policy has "stood in the way of a recovery" for the travel industry.

The association said it was calling on the government to provide financial support for travel businesses, and to introduce a testing regime that could lead to removing the need for quarantine. The firm is also pushing to "fully regionalise the UK’s quarantine policy and approach to FCDO Foreign Travel Advice".

Mark Tanzer, Chief Executive of ABTA – The Travel Association said that "the travel industry has had no meaningful chance to recover" adding that "bookings have largely vanished" and "cancellations are common".

However, he did note that there is still a demand for travel, with firms "starting to see people booking for summer 2021".

ABTA members report that they are taking summer 2021 bookings - although this is still only 45% of the bookings they'd expect to have taken at this point.

The recent news of a promising Covid-19 vaccine has already offered a glimmer of hope for holidaymakers. In fact, there has been a surge of Brits planning holidays since the announcement earlier this week, with plenty of firms already offering deals for next year.

Meanwhile, some travel companies have also been adjusting their policies to allow for more flexibility when travel restrictions change. For example, Jet2 has launched a new insurance cover that includes FCDO travel advice changes.
