Hold the Lemon Yellow – Jeff Goldblum's Mustard Outdoor Furniture Is the Timeless Alternative Design People Are Buying This Summer

Jeff goldblum on a white background.

Butter yellow has been one of the most popular color trends over the past few years. Muted and subtle, it works well on outdoor furniture as a complement to surrounding greenery – however, after seeing Jeff Goldblum's mustard-colored outdoor furniture, it's the only yellow shade we're thinking about this summer.

Rounded warm yellow outdoor seating sits by the pool at Jeff's West Hollywood home. With a recent redesign by the Los Angeles-based studio Zeb & Crunk, Jeff and his wife Emilie's home embodies exactly how to make whimsical colors and silhouettes look elevated. Though the Los Angeles property has a Spanish revival style, the mustard pieces give his pool patio a cozy, modern, and welcoming feel. It feels warm and cocooning, and blends effortlessly with the surrounding greenery.

As we consider how to decorate our own pool areas for the coming months, Jeff Goldblum's woven mustard furniture is at the front of our minds. To explore the look, Homes & Gardens curated an edit of our favorite deep yellow outdoor pieces. We also spoke with outdoor decorating experts on the rise of the shade and how they're using it this season.

Shop The Mustard Edit

Deeper and more timeless than it's lighter counterparts, mustard yellow is a constant interiors phenomenon. These are the pieces our editors are using to bring the color to your patio this summer.

Similar Shape

This beautiful mustard-colored chair has the same feel as the ones in Jeff's backyard, but would be a perfect addition to the living room. The performance fabric and stylish color are absolutely gorgeous.

Boho Style

These pretty block-printed pillows are the perfect way to bring a touch of mustard to your backyard without making a huge commitment. They would be gorgeous paired with natural wood or white furnishings.

Glazed Design

Little round side tables are my favorite addition to a stylish patio, and this curved one is especially chic. The stoneware glaze makes it easy to clean.

On-Trend Stripes

This mustard-striped lounger has a gorgeous, retro feel that makes the outside of a home feel like a nostalgic celebration. The scalloped edges bring in a subtle curve.

Perfect for Tablescaping

Bring some sunshine to your outdoor dining table this summer with a gorgeous stoneware vase. It would be perfect for displaying fresh-cut flowers all season.

Fireside Essential

A chunky knit throw is the perfect way to cuddle up on your outdoor sofa late into those long summer nights. This mustard one is a great choice for bringing the beautiful color into your home.

Style experts opt for mustard over other yellow shades because it is more timeless and easier to pair with other colors. Megan Slack, Head of Celebrity Homes at Homes & Gardens explains, 'Decorating with yellow can be a gamble, but the mustard tone of Jeff Goldblum's furniture feels almost like a neutral. It is a color that is found in nature, and has elements of the much less bold brown. It looks excellent paired with green, chocolate, or terracotta for a cozy, earthy look.'

Furthermore, mustard and amber tones like Jeff's are emerging as outdoor decorating trends as we move into Autumn and winter, making them a good investment as we look forward. The popularity of these shades goes along with the renewed interest in jewel tones across the interiors space.

Design expert Shelley Cochrane advises: 'Jewel tones were spotted on the SS26 runway, with brands like Balenciaga showcasing emerald and violet shades. We can expect this fashion trend to filter through to interiors this autumn/winter, influencing the way color is used in the home. Rich, opulent and deeply atmospheric, jewel tones feel especially appropriate for interiors in autumn/winter, as their depth brings a cossetting sense of warmth during the colder, darker months.'

Mustard is a great example of an all-seasons jewel-tone, because although it feels at home by this poolside, it would look equally appropriate in a more cocooning space.

To style jewel tones at home, Shelly advises that readers, 'lean into their richness and pair these shades with dark wooden furniture, like walnut.' We see this combination on Jeff Goldblum's patio, where the mustard colored furniture is the perfect contrast to the terracotta warmth of his poolside.

If you are thinking of trying yellow furniture this season, mustard is the shade to watch.
