Holby City's producer has spoken out on the show being cancelled and promised fans that the long-running drama will "go out strong."
Die hard fans of the programme were left devastated earlier this week when the BBC confirmed it would be coming to an end after 23 years.
Saying it was with "great sadness" that Holby City was being axed, the broadcaster's statement added: "We sometimes have to make difficult decisions to make room for new opportunities and as part of the BBC's commitment to make more programmes across the UK, we have taken the difficult decision to bring the show to a close in order to reshape the BBC’s drama slate to better reflect, represent and serve all parts of the country."
The decision to pull the plug on Holby has not gone down well at all with legions of viewers who tune in to watch it every week.
A petition set up in the wake of the news of it being axed has now gathered 11,000 signatures, with the person responsible for it urging fellow fans: "If like me and my family, you care so much about this program please share and sign this petition."

And now Seán Gleeson, Series Producer has broken his silence on Holby City being cancelled and vowed to fans that it will go out in style.
In a tweet posted on the show's Twitter account on Thursday, he told fans: "All of us at Holby have been overwhelmed and touched by the response to the announcement that this current series will be our last...
"We want to reassure our fans, colleagues and our Holby family, that we have every intention of making sure the next 9 months are the most entertaining Holby yet and that we go out strong!"
Fans were quick to respond, with one commenting: "Still can't accept it will be the end , what are @BBCOne thinking they put so much rubbish on nowadays and take the best , well i think they have shot themselves in the foot with this."
Equally angry, another wrote: "I’m really sad it’s ending! The show deserves so much better! I really hope there can be one last major Holby and Casualty crossover!
