HAKODATE, Hokkaido -- Fishing lights used to lure squid shone brightly on the sea off Hakodate, Hokkaido, on Tuesday night, adding their autumnal splendor to the city's nightscape.
Looking down on the city from higher ground in the adjacent town of Nanae, one will see the flood of the city's own illumination and also the lights from squid fishing boats farther off.
The brightness of the fishing lights is a stark contrast with the ongoing record slump in the surumeika squid catch. The amount of fresh surumeika passing through the city's wholesale fish market in fiscal 2020 was a record low at 436 tons. The slump continues with the amount landed this fiscal year as well, according to the market.
