At least 187 new infections of the novel coronavirus were expected to be confirmed in Hokkaido on Saturday, with 141 in Sapporo, or 75% of cases.
The figure far exceeded the 119 cases reported on Thursday, and marks the third consecutive day the number of cases has been higher than 100.
The Hokkaido prefectural government held a meeting of its task force on measures against the coronavirus on Saturday afternoon and decided to raise its five-tier alert system from level two to three.
