A red wine grape variety originating in Hokkaido was registered on the Paris-based International Organisation of Vine and Wine (OIV), according to the National Research Institute of Brewing (NRIB).

"Yamasachi" is the third Japanese grape variety registered on the OIV after the "Koshu" and the "Muscat Bailey A," both of which are produced in Yamanashi Prefecture.

The cold-resistant Yamasachi was created by the Ikedacho grape and wine research institute in Ikeda, Hokkaido. The municipality-owned business repeatedly crossbred the crimson glory vine growing wild in Hokkaido with the "Kiyomi" grape. "Yamasachi" is characterized by its rustic flavor and strong sourness.

The research institute and the Hiroshima Prefecture-based NRIB analyzed the genes of the Yamasachi and proved it is unique. In 2019, they applied for the grape's registration with the OIV. The registered name of the variety is "Yamasachi" and it is possible to export wines labeled with the registered name to the European Union.
