The 2023 hit Hogwarts Legacy may be getting a free-to-play sequel—and that’s not all. A new job listing from Warner Bros. suggests the next entry could also feature multiplayer elements.
First spotted by GameRant, the listing seeks a Senior Software Engineer to join WB Games’ team of “talented industry veterans working on a new online multiplayer RPG.” Adding to the speculation, a separate job posting from Avalanche Software, which has now been taken down, was recruiting a Director of Design with “experience with free-to-play or games-as-a-service models” for an online multiplayer RPG.

This news follows Hogwarts Legacy being made free to purchase for a week on the Epic Games Store as part of a holiday promotion. That move may further hint at WB Games exploring a free-to-play model for the sequel.
Taken together with ongoing fan speculation, these developments strongly suggest that WB Games and Avalanche Software are gearing up for Hogwarts Legacy 2. WB Games CFO Gunnar Wiedenfels confirmed, in an interview with Variety, the sequel’s development in 2024, though no official release window has been announced.
Hogwarts Legacy’s success sets the stage for the sequel
Since its release in 2023, Hogwarts Legacy has proven to be one of the most successful Wizarding World projects in recent years. The game topped global sales charts throughout 2023, becoming the best-selling game of the year in multiple regions despite being a single-player game. Its open-world take on Hogwarts and its magical world resonated strongly with both longtime Harry Potter fans and newcomers. But a huge fraction of the player base wasn’t happy about the missing multiplayer support—and the sequel is expected to fix that.
Many fans expect Hogwarts Legacy 2 to launch alongside the highly anticipated Harry Potter television series from HBO, which is currently projected for a 2026 release. Others believe both the series and the game could be delayed until 2027 due to potential development challenges.
