Hogwarts Express future unknown as safety upgrades delay services

  • The Jacobite steam train, famously known as the Hogwarts Express, has delayed the start of its 2026 season due to essential safety upgrades.
  • Operator West Coast Railways (WCR) is installing central door locking systems on its traditional 1950s-era Mark 1 coaches.
  • This action follows a prolonged dispute with the Office of Rail and Road (ORR) regarding regulations that prohibit passenger-operable door locks without central locking mechanisms.
  • WCR, which previously held an exemption for nearly 30 years, is now complying with the regulations, despite earlier concerns that the multimillion-pound cost could jeopardise its business.
  • The significant undertaking of upgrading the Mark 1 carriages means bookings are currently delayed, and the exact start date for services, which run between Mallaig and Fort William, remains uncertain.
