'Hogmanay at Nicola Sturgeon's house event' pulled from social media as man arrested

A man has been arrested and charged after posts emerged on social media suggesting a Hogmanay street party was planned for outside Nicola Sturgeon's house.

The event was called 'NYE street party at sturgeon's house'.

Created as a Facebook event, the page had an image attached of the First Minister enjoying a ride on a play park swing.

The event page appears to have now been removed.

Police on Thursday confirmed that a 33-year-old man had been arrested and charged in connection with communications offences.

He was released on an undertaking to appear in court at a later date.

The 'event' was publicised after Sturgeon introduced new restrictions to pubs, large gatherings and football that will come into force after Christmas and affect Hogmanay celebrations.

The First Minister said on Tuesday that the 'steep increase' of cases predicted in previous weeks has now transpired amid the new Omicron variant.

No new Christmas restrictions were announced in line with her previous comments that the guidance would not change.

However, from December 27, Scots have been urged to limit contacts and stay home as much as possible.

People in Scotland were also asked to minimise Hogmanay socialising.

The restrictions mean Edinburgh's Hogmanay street party is cancelled and football matches are to be limited to just 500 fans.

Sturgeon said: "Difficult though it is, please follow this advice over New Year - minimise Hogmanay socialising as much as you can.

"If we all follow the advice to minimise the contact we have outside our own households, we will help limit the spread of infections.

"This is the bedrock of our plan for the immediate period ahead."

A Police Scotland spokeswoman said: “A 33-year-old man has been arrested and charged in connection with communications offences.

“He was released on an undertaking to appear in court at a later date."

A Scottish Government spokesperson said: “We do not comment on live court proceedings.”
