Hodgson confirms Christian Benteke transfer decision following Mateta's Crystal Palace arrival

Roy Hodgson has confirmed that Christian Benteke will be staying at Crystal Palace until at least the end of the 2020/21 season.

The striker's current deal expires in the summer, but amid rumours that West Brom and Fenerbahce were keen on a move for the striker in the January window, Hodgson has put to bed any plans for the 30-year-old to leave Selhurst Park.

"Yes, he's travelling up to Newcastle," Hodgson told reporters. "There's nothing to the contrary on that.

"There's speculation about a lot of players all the time, but Christian and I know exactly where we stand with each other, that's for sure. I'm happy that he's staying with us."

Benteke has had a tough time in South London since completing a move worth around £30million from Liverpool in 2016.

After scoring 15 goals in the first Premier League season after his permanent move from Anfield, the striker has registered only nine further league goals in the previous three-and-a-half seasons.

Injuries have played their part in interrupting the striker's spell at Palace, but Benteke has failed to hit the heights many had hoped for after sealing a club-record transfer for the Eagles.

West Brom manager Sam Allardyce had stated that he would be interested in a move for the striker were he available, but Hodgson has always contended that the club would have to wait for an offer to be made before there was any response required.

Reports in Turkey suggested that Fenerbahce were also interested in a move for the striker on a six-month loan move, but whether they would have been willing to pick up the entirety of the striker's significant wage bill is another matter.
