Hocus Pocus 2: When's it out, who's in the cast and what's it about?

After almost 30 years, the Sanderson sisters are returning to Salem for the second installment of the cult classic Hocus Pocus. This week, Disney revealed the much-anticipated official trailer for Hocus Pocus 2, sending fans of the original Halloween favourite into a frenzy.

The original storyline followed 16-year-old Max move to Salem with his family. After struggling to fit in with his new town, he stumbles upon the Sanderson sisters' old abode, accidentally awakening the trio of wicked witches, who were executed in the 17th century witch trials, with the Black Flame Candle

Now, the second installment has moved on from Max and his family to a new group of youngsters, who must deal with the wrath of the witches.

And while many sequels sadly turn out to be a flop, not even coming close to the success of the original film - with the exception of a few - it's hard not to get excited for the return of Winnie, Sarah and Mary Sanderson, wreaking havoc and causing magical mayhem throughout the famous city of Salem.

Here's everything we know about the Hocus Pocus 2

The Hocus Pocus trailer and plot

Giving fans a sweet taste of the magic to come this autumn, Disney's new trailer for the film sees a group of girls casting a spell with the black flame candle - as seen in the first film - which subsequently resurrects the coven, played by Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker and Kathy Najimy, after they were laid to rest by Hocus Pocus 1's main protagnist, Max.

A snippet of the new film from the trailer - see here - sees Bette Midler's character, Winifred, saying: “Lock up your children! Yes, Salem, we’re back!”

A press release from Disney said of the plot: "Three young women accidentally bring the Sanderson Sisters back to modern day Salem and must figure out how to stop the child-hungry witches from wreaking a new kind of havoc on the world."

When is it out?

Filming began on the sequel in October of last year and now, Disney have confirmed it will be available to stream on Disney+ on 30 September - just in time for All Hallow's Eve.

Taking to Twitter, Disney anounced the news with the new trailer, writing: "This Halloween season, some legends never die. Hocus Pocus 2, an Original movie event, streaming September 30 on @DisneyPlus. #HocusPocus2"

Who's in it?

Fans will be delighted to hear that reprising their roles, Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker and Kathy Najimy. After it was hinted at the trio returning for the second film in 2020, with Bette Midler telling Fox 5 New York: "They want to make a movie, they’ve asked us if we were interested and of course all of us said yes. I’m game, I’m totally game" it's exciting to see it become a reality.

And the sister's aren't the only stars of the original film returning. Doug Jones will reprise his role of Billy Butcherson, Winifred's unrecipricated long lost love.

While we're excited to see some of the original cast members in action, there is whole host of talented newcomers that are sure to make this sequel a success. Names include: Whitney Peak, Lilia Buckingham, Belissa Escobedo, Ted Lasso's Sam Richardson and Hannah Waddingham.

Of course, Hocus Pocus wouldn't be Hocus Pocus without a glimpse of Winnie's loyal and beloved one-eyed spellbook.

Hocus Pocus 2 comes to Disney Plus on Friday, September 30
