Hobbs & Shaw easter egg sees Fast & Furious crossover with iconic Jason Statham film

Warning: Mild spoilers for Hobbs & Shaw

They're fought for two films in a role now in the Fast & Furious franchise, but now Luke Hobbs (Dwayne Johnson) and Deckard Shaw (Jason Statham) have a bigger problem to face.

Idris Elba plays self-described "black Superman" and international terrorist Brixton in the new spin-off film Fast & Furious Presents Hobbs & Shaw, with the character posing a threat to all of humankind.

Naturally, the bickering Hobbs & Shaw will also need a woman's touch as Shaw's very capable sister Hattie Shaw (Vanessa Kirby) is drawn into the mix.

However, one scene involving the trio contains a reference to one of Jason Statham's other cinematic adventures: the 2003 remake of The Italian Job.

In one scene, the Shaw siblings and Hobbs are in one of Deckard's garages and pass his car collection.

One moment sees Hobbs comment on one of Shaw's cars: a Mini Cooper resembling the iconic one driven in The Italian Job.

Hobbs mocks its appropriate size for Shaw, but the British assassin mentions he drove it in Italy.

Director David Leitch even spoke to Cheatsheet about the cheeky reference.

"I always hoped that that would get some traction and we could talk about it on online forums," Leitch revealed.

"Honestly, I’ll leave that open to everyone’s interpretation in what sort of mythology they want to put to it. For us, it was a sort of fun meta nod to the fact that Jason does a lot of car movies."

Is there a Jason Statham Cinematic Universe?!

Fast & Furious Presents Hobbs & Shaw is out in UK cinemas now.
