I tell ya, trying to figure out the minds of the major poll voters is hard enough. Add a little pandemic into the mix and they lose their minds trying to overanalyze and undervalue things.
Case in point Ohio State. There’s not an able-bodied person out there worth anything that thinks the Buckeyes aren’t one of the best teams in the country this year. I mean, OSU was pretty much a preseason consensus No. 2 in the country before the Big Ten closed shop for the fall, behind only Clemson.
After all the drama of remodeling the season, the Big Ten reopened the season and Ohio State went back into the polls lower because “it hasn’t played a game yet.” Okay.
Anyway, fast-forward to just one week before the season and the Buckeyes have moved up one whole spot — to No. 5 in the AP Poll. This, despite several teams like North Carolina, Georgia, and Florida losing ahead of them. Heck, The Bulldogs dropped one whole spot after getting publicly dismantled in the second-half by Alabama.
The top ten now resembles a case of renovations gone rogue. Clemson and Alabama remain No. 1 and No. 2, followed by Notre Dame (3), Georgia (4, snicker snicker), Ohio State (5), Oklahoma State (6), Texas A&M (7), Penn State (8), Cincinnati (9), and Florida (10).
Oh well, at least the major polls don’t mean a hill of beans any longer and are really just for fun debate and fodder. And … at least there’s a game on tap for Ohio State this Saturday. Yes, it is officially game week.
