HMS Queen Elizabeth aircraft carrier due to return under Forth Bridges tomorrow

The Royal Navy aircraft carrier HMS Queen Elizabeth is due to pass under the famous Forth Bridges tomorrow as she returns to the Rosyth dockyards where she was assembled.

The 65,000-tonne warship first set sail from the Fife yard in June 2017, and is returning for scheduled maintenance work.

It's the first time she has returned to Rosyth since 2017 - reuniting the carrier with sister ship HMS Prince of Wales, which is still under construction.

HMS Queen Elizabeth is due to pass under the bridges around 8am on Wednesday, depending on the weather.

The aircraft carrier is so tall it must dip its radio mast in order to fit under the bridges. It set sail from its home port at Portsmouth naval base yesterday.

Since it left Rosyth, the ship has been formally accepted into the Royal Navy and achieved a number of milestones last year.

These included the first landings and take-offs of the F-35B fighter jet.

The ship's Twitter posted: "Height check one two, one two. Next time I see these iconic bridges it will be from the underside. See you soon."

HMS Prince of Wales tweeted: "Looking forward to seeing our big sister back in Rosyth for her routine maintenance period. We've got a lot to catch up on!"
