HMS Prince of Wales: Video captures 280m supercarrier sailing under Forth Bridge

People have been capturing the moment the Royal Navy's impressive new 280m supercarrier sailed under the Forth Bridge earlier today.

The HMS Prince of Wales left its dock in Rosyth for the first time on Thursday as it prepares for nine weeks of sea trials before heading to Portsmouth.

People have taken to social media, sharing photos and videos of the £3b carrier clearing the iconic Forth Bridge afternoon with just two metres to spare.

Traffic Scotland took to Twitter shortly after 2pm, writing: "And she's off! The HMS Prince of Wales has passed our HQ making this rainy day a little better."

The 65,000-tonne Navy vessel is extremely difficult to maneuver under the bridges and must pass at low tide and lower its mast.

Many also turned out to see the spectacular sight of its sister ship, HMS Queen Elizabeth, pass under the bridges earlier this year.

Commanding officer Captain Darren Houston previously said: "I am immensely proud of the professionalism and determination that my ship’s company have shown in preparing themselves and their ship for this historic day.

"Whether through working alongside our industrial partners to support the build and commissioning of key systems or training tirelessly to operate the ship and work as a team, the crew have demonstrated unfaltering dedication and resolve in the face of a multitude of challenges.

"We are looking forward to sea trials and the opportunity to test our new ship before heading to our new home base of Portsmouth to join our sister ship."
