Let me be clear, no one is above paying their legal share of tax (Benefit fraud or tax evasion: row over the Tories’ targets, 14 April). As of 31 March 2016, HMRC has more than 26,000 people in our enforcement and compliance business, including 3,000 in our risk and intelligence service and 4,000 in our fraud investigation service, who work hard to ensure that everyone plays by the rules, especially those who can most afford it. For the small minority who try to evade paying their legal share of tax, our specialists work tirelessly to bring them to book and make them pay the tax that they owe, along with fines of up to 300%. We have brought in more than £2bn in additional revenues from the richest 500,000 taxpayers over the last six years and new powers and government funding will help us go even further.
Jennie Granger
Director general of enforcement and compliance, HMRC
