HMP Northumberland prison guard was injured by jailed burglar who started fire in his cell

A jailed burglar left a prison officer's ankle cut during a violent struggle.

Ellis Nino De Guzman was serving a 54-month sentence at HMP Northumberland when he started a fire by igniting some toilet roll in his cell in February 2019.

A court heard the flames were extinguished and 25-year-old was told he would have to be handcuffed and moved to a different part of the prison.

When three officers entered his cell Nino De Guzman "lunged" towards them.

Prosecutor Chloe Fairley told Newcastle Crown Court : "The defendant was shouting abuse and struggling with the officers, struggling violently."

The court heard one officer felt a pain to his right ankle and later realised it was cut.

The wound was glued and dressed at hospital.

Nino De Guzman, of no fixed address, admitted assault.

Judge Edward Bindloss sentenced him to nine months behind bars.

The judge told him: "The prison officer was performing his duty during the course of his employment."

Jamie Adams, defending, said Nino De Guzman had acted recklessly when he caused the injury and added: "It was not a deliberate blow."
