HMP Durham taking 'precautionary measures' after number of positive Covid cases

Precautionary measures are being taken at HMP Durham after a number of positive Covid-19 cases within the prison.

The prison service said they would "continue to closely monitor the situation" following reports of an outbreak.

It has been claimed that a cleaner at the prison tested positive and a wing had been locked down as a result.

The Ministry of Justice could not confirm any specifics but said that there had been "a small number of positive cases".

The cases are isolated to one wing and the prison say they are continuing to run as normal.

Additional support has also been brought in to assist staff.

A spokesperson said: “Our priority is to limit the spread of the virus and protect the lives of those who live and work in our prisons.

“We have taken precautionary measures at Durham following a small number of positive cases, in line with public health guidance, and will continue to closely monitor the situation.”
