HMP Bristol prisoner dies while waiting for court date during coronavirus lockdown

A prisoner at HMP Bristol has died while waiting for court date during the coronavirus lockdown.

Ashley Deane Roberts died in hospital earlier this month.

The 22-year-old was serving time on remand, meaning he had not been convicted of an offence and was being detained in prison while awaiting a trial or sentencing hearing to take place.

A Prison Service spokesperson said: “HMP Bristol prisoner Ashley Deane Roberts died in hospital on 1 May.

"Our condolences are with his family and friends at this difficult time.

“As with all deaths in custody, the Prisons and Probation Ombudsman has been informed.”

The Prisons and Probation Ombudsman confirmed an investigation had been started.

In March, a prisoner at HMP Bristol who was on trial for murder died.

Jurors at the trial of Esam Dawood, 27, of Barton Street, Gloucester, were told the defendant had taken his own life overnight.

HMP Bristol will be one of the first in the country to benefit from a "rescue package" following a damning report last year which saw the jail given the lowest gradings for safety.

The jail is one of ten prisons to benefit from the "new intensive support programme" which is being implemented to help "challenging jails" improve safety and rehabilitation.

In June last year, inspectors gave HMP Bristol the lowest gradings for safety and purposeful activity, and issued a rarely-used ‘urgent notification’ to the prison by the then Justice Secretary David Gauke.

HMP Bristol is a category B local and resettlement prison, holding male adult and young adult prisoners. At the time of the latest inspection, 464 men were resident, a slightly reduced roll, caused by the temporary closure of the prison’s D wing for refurbishment.
