HM Coastguard has slammed people "still going to the beach" despite efforts to curb the spread of coronavirus.
Boris Johnson announced lockdown measures on Monday night, which included ordering non-essential shops are to close and banning gatherings of more than two people.
However, HM Coastguard has taken to social media to condemn behaviour after receiving a high number of calls to report people on beaches across the UK.
Pete Mizen, assistant director for HM Coastguard said: “The rules are very simple and can be found on the Government website. Stay at home. The risk of spreading coronavirus is huge and while you might be okay, the person you give it to may not.
"And if you get into trouble and have to call 999 and ask for the Coastguard, you’re then putting frontline emergency responders at risk of COVID-19 too."
As reported by Edinburgh Live, East Lothian beaches were "busier than on a Bank Holiday" over the weekend as groups of families and friends flock to the popular coastal hotspots.
One local said: "This is not a holiday. I appreciate how tempting it is to come and exercise your kids at the beach on a sunny day but I am now considering confining mine to our garden."
