'Hitchhiker' dies after being hit by car on the M56

A man - believed to be a student hitchhiker - has died after he was hit by a car on the M56.

The 21-year-old, thought to be a student, was hit near to junction two for Sharston Link and the first lane of the motorway.

It is understood the man was attempting to hitch a lift when he was struck by the Jaguar XF Saloon - reports the Manchester Evening Nerws .

Emergency crews were called to the incident at 1.10am on Friday.

He was taken to hospital suffering with multiple injuries, where he later died.

Police sealed off the motorway between junction three, for Sharston, and junction one, for Kingsway, following the incident.

The route remained closed until 5am on Friday.

Greater Manchester Police now want witnesses to come forward.

It followed an earlier serious multi-vehicle crash during rush hour which closed the motorway overnight.

Emergency services were called to the scene , between junction 9, at Warrington, and junction 10. at around 5.30pm on Thursday evening.

Two air ambulances were seen arriving at the scene of the collision, which took place near to junction nine for Lymm Interchange.

This section of the motorway also re-opened in the early hours of Friday morning.
