Hit show Grand Designs flies back into Strathaven Airfield to revisit ambitious couple

A couple who risked everything to build their dream home on Strathaven Airfield are set to return to TV screens tonight as Grand Designs revisits the ambitious project.

Colin MacKinnon and partner Marta Briongos first appeared on the hit Channel 4 show back in 2013 as presenter, Kevin Kevin McCloud, followed their journey to build their home which even has an in-built air traffic control tower.

Flying instructor Colin and Marta built the massive bespoke aluminium home on their airfield in Strathaven, from where they run microlight, trapeze and hovercraft lessons.

The year-long build turned in to three and tonight Kevin – who has seen and done it all during more than 200 episodes – returns to Strathaven to see how things eventually panned out for Colin and Marta and how far the final home was from the original drawings.

The couple took on one of the most ambitious projects in the history of the show by choosing to build their massive aircraft hangar-style home out of metal, with the project eventually costing £500,000.

At one point the couple went £30,000 over budget and had to sell a painting by Scots colourist JD Ferguson to keep up.

But design-guru Kevin paid huge credit to the pair when they appeared first time round.

He said:  “It’s a miracle that Marta and Colin have built anything on this site. They are adventurers, they are stayers, and they are still here. They have survived two winters and survived their money problems."

The show, Strathaven Revisited, will air at 9pm tonight on Channel 4.
