Hit series Derry Girls to be made into a film as writer plans script

Fans were delighted when creator of Derry Girls revealed that a film of the series is in the pipeline.

After working with Hollywood star Saoirse Ronan on a special Derry Girls sketch for Comic Relief, award winning writer Lisa McGee said she will start thinking about a film script after season three.

Speaking to the  Irish Mirror, Lisa said: “For a while, I was kind of like, I dunno, will it work? But now an idea is starting to vaguely form in my head. After series three I’ll think about that a bit more I’d like to do it, and I think the girls would like to do it. The cast even, some of them are men and boys.

“I think that would sort of be the long term plan. We should have been shooting it now but it has been pushed back and we are trying to wait until it is safe."

The cast have been busy during lockdown and reunited over Zoom to rehearse before filming resumes for the third season.

Show writer Lisa McGee sent fans into meltdown when she tweeted a photo of herself and the rest of her co-stars on the call from their respective homes.

The post was re-shared by Nicola Coughlan, who plays Clare Devlin on the Channel 4 sitcom.

It appears the rest of her team - including Saoirse-Monica Jackson, Louise Harland and Jamie-Lee O'Donnell joined in on the catch-up call to practise their lines.

Derry Girls revolves around the antics of four teenage girls and their partner James.

This includes Erin, an aspiring writer, her cousin Orla and her best friend Clare, who wants to become an activist.

As well as this, Erin's friend Michelle also stars in the show, and sweetheart James, who is English.

The Irish series was nominated for a Bafta, and after the first two seasons' success, Channel 4 decided to give the green light to the renewal.
