Hit or miss? Rate Newcastle United's summer signings after first eight matches

After the Rafa Benitez 'will he/won't he' saga, Newcastle United left it late to get their transfer business done in the summer.

With Steve Bruce given only three weeks before the transfer window shut, the Magpies had to act fast to bring new faces to St James' Park.

In the end, they got five signings over the line, including a club record fee of £40m for Brazilian forward Joelinton.

He was one of three forward players signed, with the former Hoffenheim man joined by Nice winger Allan Saint-Maximin for £16m, and the free signing for ex-Magpies No 9 Andy Carroll.

Bruce also moved to strengthen his defence, with Swedish full-back Emil Krath signed from Amiens, while Dutch wing-back Jetro Willems joined on a loan deal from Eintracht Frankfurt.

While adjusting to life in the Premier League is a challenge for any player - only Carroll had played in the English top-flight previously among the United new boys - the summer recruits have had to do so amid some difficult circumstances on Tyneside.

It's been a mixed bag results-wise, with the wins over Tottenham and Manchester United highlights - heavy defeat at Norwich and Leicester two notable lows.

The players themselves had similarly fluctuating fortunes - Joelinton has worked hard and shown glimpses of what he can, but has struggled to justify his pricetag, while Saint-Maximin's early United career has been hampered by a hamstring injury.

It was only in the win over Man United that fans were able to see the Frenchman in full flow.

Carroll is being nursed back to first-team action after his lengthy injury issues, but his contribution in recent weeks has been promising, as has Willems' - his goal at Anfield being a highlight.

Krafth has already lost his place twice in the side - once to Javier Manquillo and then again to a fit-again DeAndre Yedlin last time out, and perhaps he has struggled the most to step up to the Premier League rigours.
