Hit comedy Derry Girls set to end after third season, Channel 4 confirms

The hit coming of age comedy series Derry Girls has been one of Channel 4's biggest hits, so fans are set to be disappointed that the upcoming season will be its last.

The ground-breaking show follows a set of teenage girls, and one of their boy cousins from England growing up in 1990s Northern Ireland during the troubles.

The show’s success put many of its cast on the map, particularly Nicola Coughlan who plays the "wee lesbian" Clare, who has since gone on to get a role in Netflix blockbuster drama Bridgerton.

Actress Jamie Lee, who plays loud mouth Michelle in the series was up in Glasgow earlier this year filming for new Channel 4 prison drama.

A TV source said: “Derry Girls has had a great run and will go down as one of Channel 4’s best ever comedies.

“But the show’s come to its natural end and everybody associated believes it’s the right time to go, when there’s such a demand for it.”

Creator and writer Lisa McGee said: “Derry Girls is a love letter to the place I come from and the people who shaped me. It has been an honour to write it and I will be forever proud of everything it’s achieved.”

After confirming that the third season would indeed go ahead, Lisa mentioned the idea of writing a Derry Girls movie adaption.

She said: “For a while I didn’t know if it would work but now an idea is starting to vaguely form in my head, so after series three I’ll think about that a bit more.

“I’d like to do it and I think the cast would too, so that would be the long-term plan.”

Hopefully seeing the Derry Girls on the big screen will ease the pain of the show ending for disappointed fans.
