Hit and run driver sped through red light after crashing into couple

A couple were hit by a driver who then sped off and ran a red light.

Graham Shepherd was driving through Ormskirk with his wife when they were involved in the crash. They say a black car came through a give way sign and hit their Ford Kuga on the side on Saturday, March 25, at around 5.41pm.

The 69-year-old pulled over immediately on Southport Road, only to realise the other car hadn’t stopped. He attempted to run after the car but was told by witnesses that it had sped through red lights as it left the scene.

He told Lancs Live: "I pulled up and just thought it was one of those things. I thought he’d stop and I was shocked he’d just gone off.

"I’m just grateful it wasn’t my granddaughter’s car. That doesn’t bear thinking of."

The retired electrician said they didn't suffer any injuries in the crash but the couple have been unwell in the days after it happened. He added: "We’ve both been ill, but whether it’s connected I don’t know because there’s a bug going around. Friends are saying it’s delayed shock but I don’t know."

The crash happened near to the Civic on Southport Road and Graham was keen to thank all those who helped. Neighbours came out to check on them, while staff from the Civic gave drinks and reassurance to his wife.

They also reviewed CCTV footage but their camera did not capture this incident. Graham thinks it is unlikely that the driver will ever be brought to justice and fears for the potential of another incident.

He is also facing increased insurance costs when he loses his no claims bonus. He said: "It’s a shame really. You go through life and hope that people do the right things. He’s obviously just one of those people who don’t get punished.

"To actually be hit was quite a shock but it’s the fact that someone would just drive off. Someone [driving] like that could kill someone."
