Hit-and-run driver said ‘we’ve got to go' after injuring woman in high speed crash

A heartless hit-and-run driver said "b******** to her, we’ve got to go" after injuring two women in a high-speed BMW crash.

Luke Rothwell, 25, escaped uninjured after crashing a BMW that was overcrowded with six people into a wall at 4.30am.

He ignored the pleas to tend to passenger Niamh Gara, 20, who suffered a fractured elbow and facial injuries.

Rothwell fled the scene on foot as another seriously injured passenger, Molly Ferncombe, also 20, was carried from the wreckage by a friend.

Niamh and Molly were both taken to hospital by ambulance after the crash.

Niamh's elbow was placed in a cast and she was treated with painkillers and sent home, but Molly was left scarred for life after suffering a laceration to her forehead.

She also sustained a spinal wedge fracture which left her in hospital for a month.

Police found a bottle of vodka in the footwell of the leased BMW 320D M Sport Auto3 plus numerous nitrous oxide gas bottles.

Inquiries revealed Rothwell, from Stockport, had been driving at speeds of up to 80mph in the run-up to the crash as an eyewitness said he was "absolutely tanking it".

Rothwell later gave himself up and admitted drinking alcohol and snorting cocaine in the hours before the crash but tested under the drink-drive and drug limit.

Rothwell was jailed at Minschill Street Crown Court for 27 months after admitting to causing serious injury by dangerous driving.

Rothwell, who runs a cinematography and interior renovation business, was dropping off friends following a night of partying in Manchester City Centre and a visit to a casino in Didsbury in February 2020.

Miss Alexandra Sutton, prosecuting, said: "By the early hours of the morning, he had five passengers in the car, three females and two males who he was dropping home. Niamh was in the front passenger seat and Molly was one of those in the rear seat."

She continued: "A passenger in a taxi saw a black BMW overtake it going onto the opposite side of the road and through the red traffic light.

"He estimated the speed to be 70-80mph and described it as 'absolutely tanking it'. When the lights changed to green the taxi set off and a short time later they saw the BMW had crashed into a wall.

"The passenger got out of the taxi and saw two males with Molly who had blood all over her face and looking to leave the scene. He heard one of them say 'we've got to go, get out of here'.

"The defendant got out of the driver's door and was clearly panicking but was uninjured. It was clear his main concern was to get away and when the taxi passenger pointed to Niamh who was on the floor injured the defendant replied "bollocks to her, we've got to go, call her an ambulance".

"The defendant and the other male then left the scene along with Molly who was literally carried from the scene by one of the fleeing males."

Police later arrived at the scene to find Niamh sat at the side of the car, screaming in pain, holding her arm and asking after her friends. Molly was found in a nearby side street.

Rothwell surrendered on the day of the incident and was interviewed later.

Miss Sutton added: "He didn't recall crashing the BMW but did remember having a panic attack, falling asleep and waking up at an ex-girlfriend's house. He stated he may have had one key of cocaine and he only had one or two alcoholic drinks.

"He said he did not know why he failed to stop for the police and was unsure what caused the vehicle to crash. He knew people were hurt. He said that when he woke up at his ex-girlfriend's house he was aware that people were talking about the crash and he then made the decision to hand himself in at the police station."

Rothwell has a previous conviction for careless driving from 2017 following an incident when he trying to avoid being stopped by police.

In a police statement, Molly said: "I am suffering from PTSD, and required bed rest for three months. I struggles to walk long distances and I was unable to continue with my job, which required me to stand up. My anxiety has improved but I still have aches and pains and I've since been able to get a job that allows me to work from home. "

In mitigation for Rothwell, defence counsel Neil Ronan said: "It is clear that he is regretful, and he is genuinely remorseful This has been hanging over him for some time now."

But sentencing Rothwell, Judge Tina Landale told him: "That car was overcrowded. There were five passengers, and you knew at least one was unrestrained with a seat belt. You drove at high speeds, increased your speed and drove extremely fast through a red light and went the wrong side of the carriageway. Ultimately, you crashed into a wall.

"Two women were seriously injured yet your only concern, despite the injuries of your friends, was for yourself."

Rothwell was also banned from driving for 40 months which will start when he is freed from jail.
