Hit-and-run accused likely to plead guilty, further charges possible

Police said the girl was struck near the Lutheran Church on Gap Road.

The lawyer for a man charged over a fatal hit-and-run in Alice Springs has indicated his client is likely to plead guilty to offences that resulted in the death of an 18-year-old woman.

Troy Colin Stevenson, 50, appeared briefly in the Alice Springs Local Court on Monday.

He is charged with one count of hit-and-run driving causing death, which carries a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison.

Mr Stevenson's lawyer, Russell Goldflam, said it was likely the accused man would plead guilty to the charge.

But police prosecutor Sergeant Phillip Emmett indicated there may be more charges to come.

"There may be serious charges [laid against Mr Stevenson]," he said.

"The investigation is embryonic at this stage."

Mr Stevenson did not apply for bail and was kept in custody to appear via video link from prison on February 15.

The 18-year-old woman was killed when she was struck by a car about 10:30pm on January 4 on the service road running parallel to Gap Road in Alice Springs.

Police said she was walking behind a group of three friends when she was hit, and that her friends did not see what happened.

Mr Stevenson was arrested the next day, and police said at the time that he was assisting them with their enquiries.
