History to be made in Mayo as Air Dome hosts inter-county game

History will be made today when the first ever county GAA game is held indoors at the €3million NUIG Connacht Air Dome in Bekan, Co Mayo.

Sligo face Leitrim in the FBD League in the groundbreaking game (6pm) under the 26m high roof at the Air Dome where wind and rain will never be a factor.

“I think it’s a fantastic spot, even from an atmosphere perspective. It’s very noisy in here even when you get a few hundred people in,” said Sligo boss Tony McEntee.

“You can practice and the players aren’t getting cold and wet and damp all along. So having a facility like this that you can just take 20 minutes to work through a drill is fantastic.

"This is definitely the way forward when it comes to this level of inter-county sport.”

The match will also be the first county game of year too after Waterford were forced to postpone Sunday's McGrath Cup opener against Clare as they are unable to field a team following "a number of Covid cases and close contacts as well as a number of injuries."
