History of Bombs: Ai Weiwei unveils new 1,000 square ft installation at Imperial War Museum

The Imperial War Museum today unveiled its new artwork by celebrated Chinese artist Ai Weiwei ahead of the attraction’s reopening on Saturday.

The artwork, called History of Bombs, was commissioned by the museum and will be displayed until May 2021.

The work is a display of 50 to-scale bombs from the First World War to the present day that covers the floors and walls of museum’s atrium. It spans over 1,000 square feet.

It is part of the museum’s Refugees season - a series of exhibitions and events about people around the world who have been forced to flee their home countries.

The season will be rolled out in phases across the London museum and its sister attraction in Manchester for the rest of 2020.

The Imperial War Museum was shut in March due to the coronavirus lockdown, and reopens on August 1.
