History not on Newcastle United's side but Eddie Howe feels Magpies can pull off great escape

Eddie Howe remains convinced Newcastle United can still make a great escape from the relegation dogfight.

Unfortunately history is now no longer on Newcastle's side with only Derby County in 2000/01 staying up after failing to win any of their first 13 matches.

But Howe is refusing to throw the towel in for Newcastle and insists the revival can start against Norwich City on Tuesday evening at St James' Park.

Howe said: "I'm a positive guy.

"I've seen enough from the two games to see we can compete.

"A neutral watching today wouldn't think we were in the position we were in.

"It's up to us to get the results we need."

Newcastle's website are urging the Tyneside public to "pack the park" with tickets unsold for the relation scrap with the Canaries.

Defeat would see Newcastle cut adrift at the bottom of the table - potentially by six points.

Howe says he can't wait to get that game under way, adding: "We have to look at the next game as an important game, we have to give everything in the match to try to win it."
