Nov. 03--Yann Demange's "'71" dominated the British Independent Film nominations Monday morning. The historical drama set in Belfast, Northern Ireland, earned nine nominations including best British independent film, director and debut director for Demange, lead actor for Jack O'Connell, who is the star of Angelina Jolie's "Unbroken," and supporting actor for Sean Harris.
Another historical drama, "Pride," received seven nominations, while Mike Leigh's biopic "Mr. Turner," the comedy "Frank" and the drama "Catch Me Daddy" followed with five nominations a piece.
Joining "'71" in the best film category are "Calvary," "Mr. Turner," "Pride" and "The Imitation Game."
Vying with Demange in the director category are John Michael McDonagh for "Calvary," Lenny Abrahamson for "Frank," Matthew Warchus for "Pride" and Mike Leigh for "Mr. Turner."
Competing with O'Connell for lead actor are Asa Butterfield for "X + Y," Benedict Cumberbatch for "The Imitation Game," Brendan Gleeson for "Calvary" and Timothy Spall for "Mr Turner."
Lead actress nominations went to Alicia Vikander for "Testament of Youth," Cheng Pei-pei for "Lilting," Gugu Mbatha-Raw for "Belle," Keira Knightley for "The Imitation Game" and Sameena Jabeen Ahmed for "Catch Me Daddy."
The winners will be announced Dec. 7 at the Old Billingsgate in London.
