Historical abuse survivors taking legal action after private details shared

Dozens of survivors of historical abuse whose private details were shared by email, are taking legal action.

Lawyers were last night instructed to start proceedings on their behalf.

Since news of the privacy breach broke, solicitors at KRW Law have been liaising with survivors in conjunction with support Groups Rosetta Trust, Survivors North West and Survivors Together.

Legal precedent points to a quantum valuation of between £5,000 and 15,000 for each breach of GDPR case.

KRW LAW, solicitor Owen Beattie, who represents many of the survivors affected by the breach said: "Right now there are three very important issues in play here.

“Firstly it’s crucial that the damage is limited by making sure the contents of the leaked email are not disseminated any further - I would caution any recipients  to make sure they don’t forward on elsewhere.

“Everyone has a responsibility to make sure there’s no further transmission of the leaked material.

“Secondly I can confirm we have issued the first tranche of pre action letters of claim to the Interim Advocates office on foot of our legal advice to each victim - survivors.

“At this time it’s important for us as lawyers to concentrate on the legal remedies available as a result of the breach.

“And thirdly going forward, it’s crucial that the investigation into what happened here takes place quickly and to restore much needed confidence in the Office."
