Historic Yorkshire Dales pub used in Hollywood blockbuster shuts due to energy costs

A historic Yorkshire Dales country inn which dates back to the 13th century has been forced to close its doors due to a steep rise in energy costs. The Green Dragon Inn at Hardraw, Hawes, North Yorkshire, has been renowned for its beer, food and rooms.

The pub was also known for being the gateway to the highest single-drop waterfall in England, known as Hardraw Force, which was used for the 1991 Kevin Costner film, Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves.

The Green Dragon is believed to have shut earlier this month (September). A statement on the establishment's website reads: "Unfortunately due to the current economic situation and the steep rise in energy costs, The Green Dragon Inn is closed until further notice."

The sudden closure of the Upper Wensleydale inn has shocked both residents and councillors in the Yorkshire Dales village and beyond.

Councillor Jill McMullon, chairman of Hawes and High Abbotside Parish Council, said: "It was a surprise and a shock to everybody, including the staff, I think. It's a great loss, there's no question about that. The owner had really built up the clientele and it was very well received. I can only hope someone can be found to go in it."

Cllr McMullon called the Green Dragon Inn 'iconic' as it was known across the country thanks to its film and TV connections and the famous waterfall.

She added: "A lot of people are very disappointed it's shut and so are we. It is something we are proud of..it brought a lot of people to the area. It's upsetting. We would like to think somebody can step in and take it on. It's such a great shame."

Recently, the inn had been leased and run by Chris Robinson and Ann Rennoldson however it was reported last year that the pair had found it difficult to fill staffing vacancies despite offering living accommodation. The couple, who had never ran a pub before, put on 'pie evenings' and whisky tasting as well as hosting many other events.

Cllr McMullon emphasised how very welcoming and friendly Chris had been, particularly to village residents. The owner of the inn itself is a man called Mark Thompson.

The Green Dragon Inn could not be reached for comment.
