Historic wedding venue St Andrew's in the Square to close

Much-loved wedding venue St Andrew's in the Square is to close for business next year.

Bosses confirmed the lease between the Glasgow Building Preservation Trust and the St Andrews in the Square Trust (SAINTS) has been terminated – meaning the historic building and former church is to cease trading on February 2 2020.

Sublet restaurant Cafe Source, who have taken over the running of the Merchant City building, told how they tried to negotiate a new lease with the owners but that they have been forced to shut due to operation and maintenance costs.

A statement, from directors Paul Laurie and Kenneth Donnachie, read: "We at Cafe Source are all very sorry and are devastated that, after 19 years of running a family business, we will no longer be able to trade at St Andrews in the Square as of 2nd February 2020."

They apologised to customers who have made event bookings next year for any "upset and distress caused" and confirm that catering deposits will be reimbursed. They added that no deposits were taken for event bookings, which were made "in good faith" before the negotiation process started.

The Glasgow Building Preservation Trust have been contacted for comment.

But the eatery insist it will be business as usual until next February, with the venue focusing on going out with a bang for the end-of-year festivities.

St Andrew's in the Square will be available to hire until the end of January – including Christmas and Hogmanay bookings. Cafe Source restaurant will remain open from Wednesday to Sunday.
