Historic Scotland make Edinburgh Castle's new audio guide available online

Historic Scotland have put Edinburgh Castle 's new audio guide online for those missing the famous landmark to enjoy from home.

Featuring a cast that includes famous authors like Ian Rankin and George RR Martin, actor Saoirse Ronan, who of course recently starred as Mary Queen of Scots, and The Proclaimers, the audio guide tells people everything they need to know about the landmark which dominates the city's skyline.

Considered to be one of the most exciting historic sites in Western Europe, the castle, much like other tourism sites across the country, is closed during lockdown.

However, Historic Scotland have made the newly produced audio guide, which would normally be given to people during tours of the castle, available online for a limited time.

Introduced by Broadcasters Sally Magnusson and Eddie Mair, the guide takes a look at the history of the castle - featuring everything from being the inspiration for novels such as the Inspector Rebus and Game of Thrones novels to explaining how the now famous One O'clock Gun became an Edinburgh institution.

It also takes a look at famous events such as the night the castle was bombed by German Zeppelins, the now infamous Black Dinner - the inspiration for Game of Thrones' Red Wedding - and the moving of Mons Meg.

A post on the Castle's Facebook page read: "We know you are missing the castle as much as we are.

"So for a limited time we are very excited that our brand new audio guide will be available online. Enjoy the castle's history for the comfort of your own home."

A spokesperson for Historic Environment Scotland said: “Through the audio guides, it’s great to be able to offer people a virtual taste of Edinburgh Castle while it remains closed to visitors due to the current Covid-19 pandemic.

“These guides provide a fantastic way for people to enjoy heritage at home until we look forward to welcoming them back in person.”

The guide is available to download here, with other famous sites from around the country also available.
