Historic Salford golf club could be given extra protection

A beloved golf club in Salford could be given extra protection from developers.

On November 25, Salford City Council will decide whether to give Swinton Park Golf club special status.

If the decision is made to list the golf club, it will go onto a register as an Asset of Community Value.

This status lasts for five years and if the club is put up for sale during this time, the community will be given first refusal and residents can enact a Community Right to Bid.

This will give them six months to decide if they can raise the cash to buy it.

Earlier this year, the M.E.N. reported that owners of Swinton Park Golf and Country Club voted 'in favour of pursuing' a £30m offer to buy the course from Bellway Homes, subject to planning permission.

Pressure group Save Swinton Park was created in opposition and have since been campaigning for the owners to reverse their decision.

Salford Council documents state that the group had nominated the club to be placed on the council's list for Assets of Community Value.

In a statement on behalf of Swinton Park, members Dave Marsh and Sean Cox said: "We hope Salford Council on the 25th November will grant us the status of establishing an Asset of Community Value.

"This should help us protect 100 acres of green land in the heart of Salford from becoming an housing estate for over 1,000 homes.

"The consequences are just catastrophic in that it will create an environmental and ecological disaster.

"It is hoped this ACV will deter any prospective builder and maintain the green land for generations to come."

The documents also state that councillors, Barbara Bentham, Heather Fletcher and Mike Pevitt lodged a request on behalf of Swinton South and Claremont.

Councillor Barbara Bentham said: "As local councillors we are doing all we can to support local residents such as applying to get the club listed as an Asset of Community Value.

"Swinton Park Golf Club is an important green space and we will use all powers available to us to support local residents and their interests."

Swinton Park Golf Club sits to the south of the East Lancashire Road and is approximately 100 acres (40.50 hectares).

Other buildings listed as Community Assets are Islington Mill Arts Club, the Crescent Pub and Queen's Arms in Eccles.

Swinton Park Golf Club have been approached for comment.
