Historic pub to close after it says Tier 3 rules make it impossible to carry on

An historic Wirral pub is to close its doors tonight after the owners said the harsh new Tier Three restrictions made it "nearly impossible to break even".

Irby Mill, in Greasby, announced on social media that "today (Sunday) will be our last day open."

Restrictions for areas under Tier Three, such as the Liverpool City Region, mean pubs and bars are only allowed to remain open to operate as restaurants, in which case alcohol can only be served as part of a "substantial" meal.

The post Irby Mill's Instagram account said: "After much deliberation we have come to the very difficult decision to close our doors again this evening.

"The last few weeks being in what is now Tier 2 was really tough with only single households allowed to visit us.

"Now we are in Tier 3 it's nearly impossible to break even with every guest required to eat. In the interests of the long term future of the Mill it is necessary for us to close for the foreseeable future.

"Let's hope the powers that be soon realise that it's not our country pubs to blame for the rises in this horrible (virus emoji)."

Irby Mill first opened in 1980 and gets its name because it is on the site of a former windmill.
