Historic North Wales property that was once Wetherspoon target has gone back on the market

An historic building in the heart of Conwy in North Wales has gone on the open market again.

Last year Conwy council turned down a JD Wetherspoon bid to buy Conwy Civic Hall.

The national pub chain was hoping to snap up the town centre building for a new pub, saying it would invest £3m and create 50 jobs in the town.

But it was snubbed by the council with fears locally over its impact on other local businesses and also the loss of event space on the quay.

Now the local authority has placed the site on the open market - with an asking price of £500,000. It does not now include the section of the quayside.

Interested parties have until September 30 to submit a bid.

Planning permission will be required for the site with the preferred options understood to include a residential or a hotel/restaurant development.

The council is not obliged to accept any offer.

Any offer taken forward will be submitted to the Council's Scrutiny Committee and Cabinet for approval.

Wetherspoon has previously said it would consider whether to bid again for the site and would discuss the situation at a future internal planning meeting.

Conwy cabinet member Cllr Louise Emery said earlier this year: “We know that it will become vacant in October 2019 when the new Culture Centre is completed, and the cost to keep the empty building secure would be significant, so it’s important that we find a new use for the building as soon as possible."
